St. Patrick’s Day Parade

parade-4-copy.jpg

St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner! We have found that St. Patick’s Day parades are a great place to get the gospel out to thousands of people. Few know the true history of St. Patrick — he was actually a great missionary to Ireland. We printed up a little green tract that explains the story of who he really was and what he really preached. Each year, together with the help of friends, we walk up and down the streets passing out the tracts and telling people it’s the, “…history of Saint Patick!” People smile and take them like candy. People like history. They’re interested! Afterwards we always go out for hot chocolate and a snack.

Click here or here for St Patrick’s Day reports from previous years.

If you live in or near a town that does a parade on the 17th, I’d strongly recommend you do the same thing! You are welcome to use our tracts! (link below) Even if you can’t go to a parade, this is a great week to be passing out the tract wherever you go.

Lincoln Day

Abraham Lincoln, February 9, 1864, Washington, D.C. Anthony Berger Photograph

As you may know, today many people are celebrating “Darwin Day” –Darwin’s 200 birthday. Coincidentally, today is also Abraham Lincoln’s 200 birthday. Who’s birth do you think we should celebrate — he who freed the slaves or he who degraded blacks by his racist writings?

In Darwin’s book The Descent of Man, he called those with dark skin “degraded,” and wrote that he would rather be descended from a monkey than such a “savage.” In contrast, Lincoln wrote that all men are created equal and should be treated equally before the law and God.

Baby Rescue

012709_01

Some of you may remember the story in our book (chapter 5, page 109) about when I got a fish hook stuck in my foot. Today we recieved the following e-mail:

Hi,
Just wanted to share how your book helped us in a practical way today. I have been working through “Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends” with my kids….
…Our favorite part are the stories you all share to relate your lessons. Well, thanks to one such story we were able to avoid tragedy here in the George home today. My little ones were playing and fishing out back in the lake when I heard some crying and went to see what was happening. My 1 year old had a fishing hook stuck through his mouth. Literally like you would catch a fish. All the way through! Well, your story immediately came to mind and thanks to that I knew NOT to pull the hook out because there is a barb on the end of the hook. We called 911 and waited on the fire rescue who came and cut the ends of the hook off and then were able to slide the rest out. He is doing great and sleeping peacefully as I type. I have thanked the Lord repeatedly for His care and for bringing your story to mind.

Bible Reading Plan

011709

I’ve been suprised and encouraged by how many people have told me they are doing the Bible reading plan! (And I’m optimistically assuming there are many more who haven’t told me.)

Just tonight I was talking with a friend of mine who told me of her little sister’s excitement about doing this Bible reading plan knowing that so many others are doing it too.

Here are a few responses I’ve received over e-mail:

“I am really enjoying the beginning of Genesis. Are you? As I have focused on only three to four chapters a day I have really picked up on a lot of interesting things! It is kind of cool to know someone who is reading in the same places you are!”

“The real reason that I’m writing…is to thank you for posting about reading through the Bible chronologically. I’ve decided to do it, too! I was just praying the other day and asking the Lord to give me ideas of what to do next in my Bible study time, and then I read your post. It was perfect timing. So, thanks.”

“…about reading the Bible. The holidays get pretty hectic. Anyway, I’m going to do it. It sounds like a lot of fun and I’ve always wanted to. I discussed it with my mom and she’s going to do it with me!”

“I was actually searching and searching for a chronological Bible reading plan this whole month and I couldnt find one just written out! That is perfectO, and I will definitely be reading with it, along with one or 2 other girls from my church. Thanks a lot!!”

“I’m trying the chronological Bible plan you and Sarah mentioned (on your blog and in the BL update letter) this year! My quiet time verse for this morning was Job 16:20-21 (“My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.” ) I like to think of Jesus being my friend – sometimes life can feel a bit lonely. And I like the thought that Jesus intercedes for me before God. When I pray for others I should have the same attitude of mercy, rather than a condemning and complaining attitude….Thanks for passing on the plan! It’s going to be neat to see how the order goes.” =)

Through the Bible in ’09!

“…I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food…” (Job 23:12)

122908_1

I’d like to challenge you to join my family in reading the Bible through chronologically in 2009.

Why read the Bible through in a year?
Although it’s great to slowly digest a chapter or do word studies, there is a special perspective and understanding you recieve when you read through the Bible at a faster pace. It causes you to step back and see the whole picture at once.

As believers, we are to follow the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) and many haven’t even read through the Bible in it’s entirety. It is certainly difficult to follow that with which we are unfamiliar.

What happens if you get behind?

Sometimes we’re hesitant to set goals because it heightens our possiblity of failure.

I remember feelings of despair from getting behind on my Bible reading plan in the past and realizing something like, “I’d have to read 34 chapters today to catch up! Maybe I should just quit…”

So here’s my plan this year: If I miss a day, I’m going to start fresh the next day at where I am supposed to be reading. Then I’ll record what I missed in a little journal and go back and read it whenever I can.

Here’s what to read for the first week of reading through the Bible chronologically:

Jan 1: Genesis 1-3
Jan 2: Genesis 4-7
Jan 3: Genesis 8-11
Jan 4: Job 1-5
Jan 5: Job 6-9
Jan 6: Job 10-13
Jan 7: Job 14-16

To see the whole schedule, click here.

Our church is doing this together and we’re looking forward to the fellowship it will stimulate. If you decide to take up the challenge, I’d recommend that you find others to do it with you!

The other day, my dad told me about how in 1982 he got 50-60 people to join him in something he called, “The Bible through in ’82”. Even an unsaved neighbor joined and kept up.

God bless you all and Happy New Year!

Herald from Harold

191

My Dad wrote a Christmas poem this year. He read it to us last night.
Merry Christmas Everyone!

Harold’s Herald

“Merry Christmas” is everyone’s word,
As they hurry on to shop.
“Happy New Year” is also heard,
Without even time to stop

“Get in the spirit,” some of them say,
“Bah Humbug,” you hear from others.
Christmas is coming, it’s almost the day
To give presents to sisters and brothers.

But as each December flies swiftly away
With shopping, and cookies, and singing,
The ads and the stories and songs do betray
The truth that the angels were bringing.

Shepherds replaced by stockings and toys.
No thought of Emmanuel.
Santa’s coming for girls and boys.
Of the Savior does no one tell.

Though stockings are hung on the mantel with care
And the halls are decked with holly.
Christmas morn seldom starts with prayer
And the hearts are decked with folly.

New songs of the season reflect Him no more,
Nor the tidings that angels did herald,
Nor of the “faithful who come Him to adore,”
So well proclaimed in old carols.

In the sky it’s a sleigh and no longer a star;
The Savior displaced by Saint Nick.
It is reindeer not wisemen that come from afar.
Politically correct does the trick.

Snowmen are nice on a white yuletide day,
And the merriness people have wished us.
But for most of the world, if the truth we did weigh,
The Grinch really has stolen Christmas.

This concept people don’t even remember—
The event called the incarnation.
They simply delight in the festive December
And join in their false celebration.

Christmas used to be a wonderful time
To retell to the world the glad tidings
Of the great plan of God, in both décor and rhyme,
That his Son was with us abiding.

And still to this day we see houses alight,
With electrical technical glare.
But true joy from new life and escape from sins plight?
Of this they seem unaware.

Our country avoids the true Biblical story,
Just pretending it to proclaim;
All to sell some inventory,
Hoping wise men today won’t complain.

Our stores and people, in sales delight,
But from the one whom “this day is born”
They seem to shy away in fright,
And with alternate decor adorn.

What happened to Bethlehem and “no room in the inn?”
To the “Word made flesh and dwelt among us?”
What happened to Jesus who shall save us from sin?
And “Glory to God in the Highest?”

To many it’s just Happy Holidays,
No need to know the reason;
Just have fun with snowmen and sleighs
And the festivities of the season.

Lest money be lost from people offended,
Lest God be given glory.
Lest “politically correct” be unwillingly suspended
By telling the real Christmas story.

The point is missed by so many these days
It’s not a mere memory of birth;
But rather a time to welcome with praise
The coming of God to the earth

This is a concept the world does despise,
Though, they like the gifts and next sale.
Satisfied they are with their compromise
As long as the truth they can veil.

But why sing of mistletoe, snowmen and toys
Let the Wonder of history be heard!
What an insult to God when the world employs
Fantasy instead of God’s Word.

Christmas at the Creation Museum

17
Sarah, my dad and I spent the weekend in Cincinatti, helping out with some special Christmas events at the Creation Museum.

13
We ran into a family who leads a Bright Lights group in Dayton. We enjoyed getting acquainted and were grateful for the way God brought our paths together.

4
Sarah and I provided background music for a banquet Friday evening. Since we were asked to play simultaneously in two different rooms, Sarah and I strategically decided to switch places half way through (so we could both play our best songs in each room). People frequently ask if we’re twins anyway so we dressed alike and figured people wouldn’t notice. 🙂 People are a little surprised when we tell them we’re actually 10 years apart.

6
Little kids love the harps.

7
Last evening we helped with the live nativity on the Creation Museum grounds. Here a “Bethlehem local” tells stories by one of the fire pits.

121
The Shepherds captured eveyone’s attention with their animated and humorous stories, and then sent the crowds on their way to see the child.

131
I think the event was especially fascinating to the little children…

8
Mary and Joseph

10
All the animals and authentically dressed actors made everyone feel like they were really in Bethlehem. I heard that about 1,200 guests came through last night.

111
I enjoyed helping as a vendor selling hot drinks and “provisions for the journey”.

16
Here I am with “the Innkeeper”, (a friend of mine who is the manager of housekeeping at the museum)

14
Gomer the camel behaved pretty well, from what I hear. The museum checked into the cost of renting a camel and decided it would be a better deal to simply buy the camel. That started the Museum Petting Zoo. Now they have tons of animals.

9
Nice outfits, huh? The Museum design team created them, along with all the other outfits.

Thanksgiving at our Bible Chapel

As the sun was setting last night, everyone from our Bible chapel came out and enjoyed a big Thanksgiving feast together. Hot apple cider was served at the door.

It was a very special evening. Good testimonies, fellowship, special music, great food, lots of smiles and enthusiasm. I love the way our little group operates and feels like a family. We are thankful for the strong fellowship and good spirit we have in our little church. One of the elements that continually bonds and strengthens our group is our weekly breaking of bread meeting.

My dad said we couldn’t have a Thanksgiving without Indians, so he turned several of us into Indians to enhance the atmosphere.

Rachel and Stephanie singing and playing “El Shaddai”.

Bryan singing a song about God’s holiness.

Fireproof Movie

Our family saw the movie FireProof this week, and we highly recommend it — for teens as well as adults. If you’ve already seen it, I’d recommend babysitting for other parents so that they can see it too.

Not only is “Fireproof” making a huge impact in the Christian community, it is also capturing the attention of the secular world. ABC World News gave a report this evening on the amazing success of this low-budget Christian film made in no-where Georgia. (And what a great day for it to be highlighted on ABC! So many people were watching the news today because of everything else that’s going on in this country.)

ABC News states,
“You can almost picture the Hollywood studio execs scratching their heads. A film that was made for $500,000, relied more on word of mouth than television and print ads, and is headlined by an actor best known for a 1980s television show, opens at No. 4 in the country and rakes in $6.8 million in ticket sales.”

The world marvels at how such a low budget film could be making such a huge impact, but it’s no surprise to us as Christians. We know that it’s the way our God works! He loves to take the efforts of the small and unlikely and use them in amazing ways for His purposes. This way, He gets all the glory.

Paul said to the Corinthians,
“…God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:27-31)

We’re also encouraged by the great testimony Kirk Cameron displayed by upholding his commitment to not kiss anyone but his wife—even in acting. (His real wife, Chelsea, was a stand-in during the kiss.) See the story here.
