Will Our Generation Speak: Behind the Scenes

Will Our Generation Speak? A Call to Be Bold with the Gospel is now in the very final stages. We wanted to give you a peek behind the scenes at what is involved in putting pictures into the book. The time lapse in the middle of this video clip allows you to watch my dad’s screen as he draws.

This drawing took my dad a couple hours, but Stephen sped it up to a couple minutes and created this clip to give you a little feel for one of the things that’s been going on around here over the winter months.

Family News/Homeschool Conferences

In South Carolina

Girls we met at the conference last weekend

This past weekend was very full of activity at the home school conference here in South Carolina. We were giving some new sessions, which always makes everything busier … in a good way … though it is extra pressure. However, we definitely saw the Lord answering prayers, and have lots to praise Him for.

Our temporary office

Our family will be at another conference down here next weekend, so in between we’re taking advantage of some quiet days at our hotel to get some work done! The lobby has been very quiet, which has been great. Exactly what we needed. Sarah has been helping me edit chapters and we are excited to be releasing this book really soon now …

From what we hear, Bekah and Nickie have been very busy keeping up with everything at the office while we’re gone and we are very grateful for them!

Also, we are excited that on St Patrick’s day in our town, Nickie and several friends went witnessing and got into a lot of good witnessing conversations and passed out tracts. See pictures on the Edward’s family blog here.

Better Than Anyone Expected…

First of all, thank you all so much for your kind comments and prayers. It means so much to us, and is so sweet of you all.

We were very surprised by the doctor’s words when he came out to tell us how the surgery went this morning: There was no tumor, and the ovaries were perfectly healthy! What had appeared as a tumor was the appendix. They said the appendix was as hard as a rock. It had shown up on the ultrasound as a solid mass next to the ovary. So, the doctor left the ovaries and removed the appendix. This was about the best news we could have heard — better than any of us expected! No tumor, no cancer, just an appendix removal! Mom is perfectly healthy. Praise God!

After the surgery, mom was very upbeat. [smile] We are now all celebrating, so grateful to the Lord for his undeserved goodness. Now we are all at home eating chicken noodle soup (along with mom).

Grateful For…

-The wonderful Christian doctor who performed the surgery.

-That even if we would have found out that mom had cancer, we are well cared by our Heavenly Father and it still would have all been okay (1 Peter 1).

-We had some very good talks with people we met in the waiting room and nurses! This made the morning extra special.

-We are grateful to friends who joined us at the hospital this morning — especially Deb and Nickie Biegler who have been battling cancer in their own family. Please pray for Nickie’s dad, Todd. They found out he had cancer last August. It has been a long difficult journey for their family. Please join us in lifting them to the Lord in prayer.

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning and Thy faithfulness every night” (Psalm 92:1-2).

Need Prayer For Unexpected Surgery

Five days ago we learned that my mom has a walnut sized tumor on her ovary. Mom and Dad had an appointment with a Christian gynecologist this morning. We don’t know if the tumor is malignant, but since mom has had two aunts die of ovarian cancer, and it is sometimes hereditary, we want to take care of this right away.

However, there are several pieces of good news:

-They scheduled surgery for this Thursday. Apparently the receptionist worked for about 45 minutes to get the appointment scheduled so soon–coordinating two doctors, the hospital, and the anesthesiologist. My mom was so happy that she was able to schedule it so soon, she gave the receptionist a big hug. [smile] She explained how it was an answer to prayer.

-Dad said that Mom was witnessing to everyone in the waiting room. Mom and Dad both have been quite the evangelists with all the people they are encountering. In fact, most of supper tonight was spent listening to their stories. Praise the Lord for that!

The surgery will be this Thursday (March 1st) at 7:30 am. Thank you for praying.

Dad’s verse of the day today: “Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me” (Psalm 27:7).

A Winter of “Hibernation” and Writing!

Things have been busy around here! The current big project is finishing the book on witnessing which I have been working on. The title is “Will Our Generation Speak? A Call to Be Bold with the Gospel.”

Sarah has been working full time with me on the book for most of the winter. I have no idea how I would be doing this project without her. I took this picture the other day as her desk was full of books while she spent the afternoon looking up some mission statistics for me for chapter sixteen.

We are in a race to the finish line now, and Mom has been helping us maximize work hours by bringing supper over to our office so we don’t have to take the time to go home for it. She also takes care of everything at home … she does so much.

Nickie and Bekah keep the Bright Lights ministry running, while also helping with the production of new materials … Bekah just finished a study guide for Before You Meet Prince Charming (which Nickie edited and laid out in InDesign) and Nickie has been spending many hours putting the cartoons for my book into InDesign and adding the captions.

Stephen … lol … is happy that he just finished doing our taxes.

Grandpa lightens the load for everyone by working in the basement four mornings a week, preparing materials for upcoming conferences. He recently showed me his long list of materials to pack for our first home school conference trip to SC next month. Grandpa also keeps our basement “warehouse” packaging area very well organized. We really appreciate him!

Andrew has been editing video from the Strong in the Lord Conferences. It’s a big job and video editing can be very tedious.

My dad has been putting many, many hours into drawing cartoons for my book. Since our little “cartoon pizza party” we had last fall to brainstorm for ideas we’ve come a long way … [smile] … and Dad has been doing such a great job.

More reports coming soon. For now, we’d appreciate prayer about this book, that the Lord would use it mightily in our generation.

Happy Birthday Sarah!

All of us girls at the Bright Lights office started out the day at the coffee shop next door to celebrate with Sarah, whose birthday was yesterday. Things are going well with us. We have been consumed with lots of writing, editing, and planning for the coming year.

“And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9)

What A Night!

Two nights ago, we saw many answers to prayer in regard to our church’s Thanksgiving dinner outreach. We had about sixteen International students join us! Students at this table were from Malaysia and Taiwan.

Students at this table came from Germany, France, Spain and Sweden.

After the meal we had special music, singing, a slideshow of pictures and Mr. Woodhouse gave a terrific message about the founding of our nation — with a very clear gospel presentation.

“Most young people in Europe don’t really care about religion,” the European students told me over dinner, explaining how empty the large church buildings are on Sunday mornings. I acknowledged I had heard similar reports.

“I think one reason for that is evolutionary teaching,” I told them, “Because if people believe that they evolved, and science has disproven the Bible, how can they really believe it?”

“I was taught evolution, but I don’t see a contradiction between evolution and the Bible,” one of them said. “I just take the beginning of Genesis metaphorically.”

I explained how many Christians who are also scientists teach how the Bible and science are consistent. I told them how we run a bookstore in town that carries about 350 titles of these kind of books. (Books on creation science in every area of science and on every level, from first grade to PhD.), explaining that “We (Creationists) look at the same evidence as evolutionists do, but come to different conclusions because we start with different presuppositions. For example, we believe Noah’s flood explains a lot of things — like canyons. People who believe the earth is millions of years old believe that canyons formed over long periods of time. But we believe they happened quickly by the huge amount of water during the flood.”

The surprised, skeptical look on his face told me these were sort of new and different ideas to him, yet he seemed intrigued that I held this view.

“So you really take the whole Bible literally?” he asked.

“Yeah!” I said.

“I’ve heard that there were people like you in America but I’ve never met one,” he replied.

[smile]

“So…how old is the earth?” he asked.

I laughed, anticipating his reaction to my answer. “About six thousand years,” I said.

Understandably, this was somewhat surprising for him.

I didn’t really want to talk about origins the whole time, so I stressed the importance of the gospel (the cross and resurrection) but I asked, “How can one believe the end of the Bible if they can’t believe the beginning?”

“Yeah, I’ve wondered that before,” he said, “Like about the contradictions in Scripture.”

I mentioned how it’s true that people claim there are contradictions, but I’ve never been shown a contradiction that was a true contradiction. They always have answers and explanations.

Though it was obvious these comments were all new to him, he was nice and he definitely seemed like a thinker.

Some friends and I met these girls from Vietnam while talking with students on their campus a few weeks ago. I was then able to attend a presentation on Vietnam they taught last week — and then they came to the Thanksgiving dinner.

If you still have room at your Thanksgiving dinner in your home or at your church, consider inviting some international students. They are grateful for the opportunity to learn about American culture while they are here, and Thanksgiving is a perfect open door for this. (Christmas is too!)

We were able to have an e-mail invite sent to all the international students at our local college, and I assume something similar could be done at any college. Even though many of the students had never met us before, they seemed eager to come and expressed how much they enjoyed the evening.

Hello Everybody

The problem that arises when neglect my blog for so long is that I create such a “build up” of things to report I don’t know where to start!

First off, I want to say a big thank you to the Bright Lights summer interns: Jolynn, Emily, Anna, and Melodie. They worked so hard, and I don’t know how we could have done it all without them this summer. So many good memories!! The fellowship was very special. We love you guys!

Secondly, thank you to anyone who was praying for our team during the conferences. I had specifically requested prayer before the last conference (pictured above) and the Lord definitely provided and did some very encouraging things! We heard so many stories and good reports. And God gave us the energy and enthusiasm we needed to finish strong.
We have just one set of conferences left for this year. They will be held in Minneapolis on October 4-8. Click here for more information.

Thirdly, I want to thank you all for the encouraging feedback you gave as we were picking a new design for the Bright Lights binder. Wow–we appreciated everyone who commented! We had many discussions around the graphics computer (a frequent occurrence around here!) and we finally finished and ordered the binders. The picture above is Caitlyn, Jolynn and Nickie finishing up the project after Emily left (with Lois watching on the left :)).

On the home front, we are getting a new roof on both houses (our family’s house and the intern/guest house.) Some good friends, the Blooms, are staying with us and Mr. Bloom is helping with the roofing. We are having a little too much fun listening to their funny stories over meals.

AND we removed all the overgrown bushes from the front of the guest house. Actually, we didn’t do it–some other good friends from Nebraska (who hosted my parents during the NE Bright Lights conference this summer) came to visit for a day and asked if there was anything they could do to help. Anyone who knows our family very well knows we usually don’t turn down those kinds of offers. 🙂 Here’s Mr. Rothfuss with the chainsaw.

Thank you, Rothfuss family!

We have also been enjoying having Lois living with us (left) for a while. Her family has been serving with an orphanage and school in Thailand, and we’ve been friends with them for several years. Lois has been WONDERFUL to have around. I took this picture yesterday as we were eating a special Thai lunch that she and Jolynn made for us. Soooo good.

If you are an American and have never eaten homemade coconut cream icecream with peanuts and sweet corn, you are missing out!! (Seriously!)

Here was the little luncheon.

Well, I think that’s enough pictures for now!

One last comment: At the Bright Lights conferences this summer I announced that I would be posting some witnessing questionnaires here on the blog for people to use. I haven’t forgotten, and it will be coming soon! Thank you everyone for your patience.

New Hampshire and Back

We just added 2,739 miles to our van and had a very nice trip to New Hampshire.

Home school conferences usually mean lots of cute little kids.

Stephen and a new friend. After we gave a presentation on “family ministry,” several families shared with us about the ministries the Lord had already given them. It was very encouraging to see the “ministry mindset” many of the families there had.

One evening my parents wanted to go to the Red Arrow Cafe downtown Manchester. The rest of us weren’t so sure, but we liked it so much we went back a second time. (Actually, Stephen went back three times, haha) The food was SO good and the atmosphere was a lot of fun too. (Very friendly!) Apparently it’s quite famous and it’s open 24/7, 365 days a year.

My dad wanted to get into a conversation with the men next to him, so he asked them what they normally order for dessert. When He told them we were in town for a home school conference, they said they were lobbying for home schooling and other educational issues in New Hampshire (though they hadn’t heard about the conference going on). Both were glad to meet each other and they had a great talk. I think our waiter (right) was a little intrigued by it all.

On the way home at this hotel breakfast my dad made friends with a Chinese man. He was working on his laptop downstairs while his wife and 2-yr-old boy were still sleeping. Dad told him how we were here for a home school conference, which led to talking about Christianity. He said he’s been going to church with his wife for the past 3 years or so. Upon finding out he was a lawyer, my dad explained how what happened on the cross was a judicial transaction because God is a just God. Later, the Chinese man introduced us to his wife and little boy. They were so friendly, and it was fun to meet them.

When we leave on a trip we never know what adventures or blessings God has prepared…but we do know that when it’s all over what really matters is the people we crossed paths with and the way we interacted with them. People are eternal, things are not. May God give us grace to keep our heart set on loving Him and loving people as foremost priority in our lives.

Jolynn!

We are very excited to have Jolynn here with us! She was a wonderful hostess to us when we were in Singapore and Malaysia, and now it’s great to have her here with us! She has been spending long hours at the graphics computer working on graphic design projects. CD covers, DVD labels, a Noah’s Archive brochure, etc.

Entering registrations for upcoming Bright Lights conferences.

Not only has Jolynn been a really big help, she’s a good friend and we just enjoy having her around. 🙂

This is Jolynn’s Bright Lights group in Singapore. She has been leading a Bright Lights group in Singapore for the past 4 1/2 years. Now Abigail (right front) is stepping up to lead the group while she is here in the States. See their Bright Lights group’s blog here.

Last week we went to the hospital in Iowa City to visit Genna, a girl from Michigan who recently went through a major surgery. Her family had to travel to Iowa for the surgery and have been away from their home in Michigan for a while now. Genna attended a Bright Lights conference in MI several years ago. Her mom told us that she made a decision at the conference to read God’s Word everyday, and was consistent in reading her Bible 30 minutes every day for two years! Wow – what a great example of consistency. It reminds me of this passage:
“…for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. ” (Gal 6:7-9)
The seed we sow in our hearts will grow and produce fruit later on. There is no avoiding it. The question is: are we planting good or bad seeds? When reading Genna’s care page online I was blessed by the verses she had mentioned that had encouraged her. Wouldn’t you agree that the reason Genna has been so strong and has been such a sweet “bright light” to the nurses and doctors is because she has been planting God’s Word in her heart–and it’s showing now?!

Lunch today. Lots of people “volunteering” at the Bright Lights office this morning. Thanks everyone!! 🙂
