Witnessing Stories

Farmers’ Market Adventures

Last Saturday we went to a farmers market to share the gospel. We prayed that the Lord would lead us to the right people. One girl we talked with had nearly died in a car accident several years back. Brad (a friend we were witnessing with) asked her, “If you would have died, would you have gone to Heaven or Hell?” This really opened up the conversation with her and her boyfriend. She responded with serious interest to the gospel message.

Another guy named Andrew explained that he just got saved last year. He was with some unsaved friends that he had been trying to witness to, and he really appreciated the help in sharing the gospel with them! He said, “Just last night we had a long talk/debate about these things!” Andrew explained that he has been trying to share his faith, but he doesn’t know very many other people who do. He said, “It’s so encouraging meeting you.”

It is a beautiful thing to pray and then watch the Lord answer with those short interactions that are of eternal significance — explaining the greatest news in the world … one conversation at a time.

Deut 31:6 says: “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” This was written to Israel as they were preparing to go into the promised land. We serve the same God Who also sends us to conquer but in a different way.

  1. Hi, can anyone give me any advice on how to deal with people who get very angry and belligerent when you share your faith, and accuse you of pushing your beliefs on others? Also, what is a good way to respond to people who claim to believe in God and Jesus and yet don’t believe that Jesus is the only way to God, and tell you to “back off” on the Bible with them? Have any of you experienced this kind of thing in sharing your faith, and could you offer any advice? I would appreciate it 🙂

  2. It’s so encouraging seeing you go out a witness to others the way you do. I have never witnessed faced to face with a person and it kind of scares me, but I have had a strong feeling lately that I need to start doing it. Our world is going down the wrong path, and I believe that we as Christians should stand up and start to make an impact for Christ, because that’s really the only way this world is going to turn around and start doing what’s right. Thanks for being so bold in your Christian faith, it’s rare and so refreshing to hear about it. God bless you and your family in y’all’s work.

  3. 4 of us went witnessing yesterday! It was such a beautiful day for it! The first lady Rachel and I talked to was a Christian! Then we talked to two college students who were “not religious.” They said they had never really thought about eternity before. Then, we ran into some guys from another church who were also doing some witnessing! We talked with another lady who wasn’t so easy to talk to. My brother and another guy from church were able to talk with a few guys for quite awhile! It was such a great first day of witnessing for our group. We hope to go again October 6. 🙂

  4. Carrissa: I am sorry I have not responded to this sooner. We just had a really busy week / weekend.
When people get upset, it is often because they feel guilty or threatened. Truth often makes people uncomfortable, yet still needs to be spoken. (Even though you wouldn’t like hearing the news that you had cancer, you still would be glad that your doctor told you the truth.) But truth can be spoken graciously and tactfully. Try asking more questions, or sharing your personal testimony. Humbly explain your need for salvation, how God saved you, and how He still helps you and gives strength and grace… Remember it’s not our responsibility to convict or convert–only to converse. (That’s a quote I’ve appreciated from Carl Kerby.) Hope this helps a bit. Btw, i have a whole chapter about this in my book “Will Our Generation Speak?” that may be helpful for you as well. Oh, and when people say Jesus isn’t the only way to God, ask “Why did He die on the cross then?” and “If one could get to Heaven by another way, why would God let his Son go through such agony when it wasn’t even necessary?”
Purity: Thank you for your words of encouragement. Remember that God gives grace when we step out and obey! And we will never regret one step of obedience to Jesus. And I totally agree with you — the only thing that will really help this world is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Lydia: That is so exciting to hear the report! Thanks for sharing! Praise God for how He orchestrated everything. I think often he leads us to believers too so we can encourage each other. 🙂
