Last weekend, my dad and I went up to Rochester, Minnesota for the 25th anniversary of the Bible Quizzing league in Rochester, MN. (Bible Quizzing was actually started by Youth For Christ in 1947 but we were celebrating the league that started in Rochester in 1984.) We both really enjoyed the weekend and saw a lot of old friends.
Looking back, we wouldn’t trade the time we’ve given to Bible quizzing for anything. It’s hard to adequately express our gratefulness for this program and for the way it helps young people memorize large portions of Scripture.
Here’s a glimpse of how it works: The “quiz master” uses this box to detect which quizzer jumps first. Each quizzer sits on a pad which triggers a light on the quiz master’s box when he or she jumps. Whoever stands up first gets to answer the question. The competition can get pretty intense, and often once you’ve tried it, you’re stuck–memorizing God’s Word and coming back year after year to quiz. 🙂 If you’d like to learn more about Bible quizzing, see www.wbqa.org
I agree! BQ is a wonderful program! Looks like you guys had fun. But Grace, I thought you were too old to quiz.?. When I looked on the WBQA website earlier this year (’cause I thought that I could quiz with Hannah and Leah if we went with the WBQA team) it said I was too old. I’m only a month older than you, so did I read the rules wrong? 🙂
Hi Bekah!
Well, yes, I am officially too old to quiz, but they let you quiz one year longer in Rochester so I’m taking advantage of that. 🙂 Not sure if I’ll do it every month, but I at least wanted to go this time.
BUT–Guess what? I just learned that the WBQA board has made a change in the rules this year for the World Tournament (3-day tournament held at Cedarville Collage in the end of June over the entire material) and they are allowing alumni quizzers to come back and quiz again as long as they are the only ones on the team. The goal is for “retired” quizzers to be able to come back and support a team.
I would LOVE to go, but not sure if it will work out regarding scheduling and all….but, we could go together and you and Hannah and Leah could be a team and then I could find a team……that would be SO fun. (And great motivation to get the material all learned, right?!) Pray about it and let me know what you think! We could easily help you guys to learn to quiz WBQA style! 🙂 Did you learn 1st and 2nd Corinthians last time around?
Hmmm…we’ll have to think about that. Last time around, I only memorized 1 Corinthians because I was in the “new quizzers” league and we did just half of the material.
Hannah and Leah are quizzing this year (with our old church’s team) and they are doing great! We aim to be through all of the material by February. We started a little late, so they are playing “catch up” right now, but they already have almost half of 1 Cor. done. They have a very ambitious coach (aka me!) that is keep them on schedule and constantly bothering them to quote to me!
That’s awesome, Bekah. Way to go…what a great big sis. 🙂 I remember when Sarah used to give Stephen and me candy and little puzzles, etc. for rewards for when we memorized for quizzing. (So you can ask Sarah if you need advice for special big sister prizes 🙂 )
That’s great that Hannah and Leah are learning it so quickly, too…. so are you learning it along with them? You should bring them to one of our quiz practices sometime…just for the extra practice!
So how does it feel to be 21? Let me know if you have any special words of advice for me when I get there. 🙂
TTYL,
Grace
Bible Quizzing is awesome! I just joined a team this year and I am absolutely loving it! Quizzing is a wonderful way to ingrain God’s word into our mind and heart. I think it is so wonderful that you still get to quiz for a little while more…..I am thankful that I am able to get the opportunity to do it now before I get to old.
I am also from your intern Abigail’s Bright Lights group. Tell her hi for me! 🙂

Yes, Grace – I’m pulling out all of the stops to motivate them! Not that they aren’t doing a good job, but just to give them that extra little push. I’ve started a points system with them (they earn points by quoting, answering questions in practice, etc). Once they earn enough points, they can trade them in for something special -i.e. a new CD or book, a salon haircut, money for new clothes…you get the idea! So far, it’s working. 🙂
It’d be fun to come to a practice sometime, but Thursday nights don’t work the best for us. It’s one of the few nights a week that we’re all home together, so we try to guard those nights and keep them free. But I’ll ask Mom about it!
BTW, I don’t feel much different after turning 21. But I think having the “1” behind the “2” just looks more distinguished, don’t you think? Maybe after I settle into being 21 in a few weeks, I’ll have some advice for you. 🙂
I remember that Bible Quizzing! Maybe next year. Bible Quizzing is so helpful for getting God’s word into your heart. I had thought you were too old as well, Grace. 🙂 Little sisters can learn so much from just listening to you.
