We’ve been passing out tracts on The Fourth of July for many years. It’s a fantastic time to hand out tracts because people sit around for hours just waiting for the fireworks to start. If you hand them a tract, they usually read it right there on the spot. This year is a special opportunity as our nation celebrates 250 years of independence. Because of this, we decided it was time to expand our tract “The Price of Liberty,” and print it in bulk to share with others.

This tract tells a gripping story from the Revolutionary War, and then explains that the price of freedom is blood. The same price was paid for our spiritual freedom—the blood of Jesus, the Son of God.

“Take good care of the children,” said Isaac Davis, as he locked eyes with his wife, Hannah. He had spent months preparing for this moment. Just a few hours earlier, he had received the news: the British soldiers were about to attack. There was not a moment to lose. After years of rising tension, the American Colonies were at war!

Thanks to the midnight ride of Paul Revere, the alarm had spread and men were mobilizing. Davis’s company of 30 Minutemen—the best-prepared in all of Massachusetts—had gathered in his home early that morning. As he said good-bye to Hannah, Davis seemed to know he wouldn’t be coming home.

At 7:00 am, April 19, 1775, Isaac Davis led his company out, singing as they marched. After two hours, they reached Old North Bridge, which the British had seized. Several other companies of Minutemen had also arrived, totaling about 500 men. When Davis was asked if his company would lead, he boldly replied, “I have not a man that is afraid to go.”

This brave little group marched forward. The fight that ensued is known as “The Battle of Concord.” Isaac Davis was shot through the heart. His death was not in vain. The British retreated, and the bridge was retaken. The Colonial soldiers grew in courage. Isaac Davis gave his life for his nation—the first officer to die in the American Revolutionary War.

Freedom has a high price—blood! Men and women died to win our freedom. This is a simple concept which we all understand. We honor our independence for two reasons:
1) Freedom is a great thing.
2) The price was high.

Greater Freedom
National freedom is an amazing gift, but it’s temporary. Our life lasts only 70-80 years on average. The most important kind of freedom is spiritual freedom. It lasts forever.

This freedom also has the same high price—blood. Eternal freedom was purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

What is spiritual freedom? It is having peace with God for eternity. The Bible talks about this freedom in John 8:32 where Jesus says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus was not talking about national freedom, but about freedom from sin, guilt, and death.

Think of it this way: what is the worst situation we could be in? It’s being in trouble with God. You may not think of yourself as in trouble with God, but the reality is that we will all stand before Him (the Judge of the Universe). He is holy and just, and He must punish sin. If you have broken God’s law (lied, stolen, disobeyed parents, hated, lusted, etc.), you will be held accountable. No one can escape the reality of death and the judgment to follow. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Will you be innocent or guilty when you stand before Him?

The good news is that God loves you and has provided an escape from the penalty for sin. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). When Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world, His blood purchased our eternal freedom!

Isaac Davis was a hero, and we still benefit from his sacrifice. Yet Jesus Christ accomplished something much greater. He conquered death itself! He rose from the dead as the mighty Victor. Now He offers eternal life for those who turn to Him.

What Will You Do?
You can’t get rid of your guilt before God on your own. You must trust Jesus’ sacrifice to save you. Ask God to forgive you for your sin. Believe in Jesus, the One who paid the ultimate price for your freedom—the price of blood.

“So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

“In him (Jesus) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Let it be true that “In God We Trust.” Not just for good things here on earth, but for forgiveness and eternal life.
