Did You Know?
- St. Patrick was not Irish. He was English.
- At the age of 16, Patrick was captured by Irish pirates from his home in England and sold into slavery in Ireland.
- During the time of Patrick’s imprisonment, something very important happened in his life—he turned to God. In his own words, he explained, “It was there that the Lord opened the understanding of my unbelieving heart, so that I should recall my sins and turn with all my heart to the Lord my God.”
- After six long years of slavery, Patrick finally escaped from Ireland.
- After his release, Patrick made an incredible decision. He decided to return to Ireland, the place of his imprisonment, as a missionary. He wanted to share with them the message that had changed his life.
- Patrick knew that the people of Ireland were actually the captive ones—in slavery to sin. They were trapped by the deceptions of myths, with no hope or meaning in life. Patrick knew that only Jesus could forgive and deliver them.
- Patrick suffered greatly, at times being put in chains and barely escaping with his life. Many followers of Christ were put to death during this time. Nevertheless, Patrick continued to preach the truth about Jesus with boldness.
- Ireland responded in amazing ways to this good news. People listened to Patrick’s preaching and understood how Christ had defeated death and paid for sins. In fact, all of Ireland was affected, and as a result the world remembers Patrick to this day. However, it was not to Patrick that early Ireland responded—but to Jesus Christ!
Patrick’s Message
- Sin enslaves people. “Everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin” (John 8:34, The Bible). “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, The Bible). “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2, The Bible).
- God created us, loves us greatly, is rich in mercy, and provided a way to rescue us from the penalty of our sin (death and Hell).
- Even though we broke His law, Jesus paid our fine. God became a man (Jesus) to die on the cross in our place, as our substitute.
- Jesus was buried and rose from the dead three days later, as the Old Testament predicted hundreds of years beforehand.
- We cannot earn Heaven by trying to be a “good person.” God’s standard is perfection, and even one sin disqualifies us from Heaven! But God made a way for us by His grace. (Grace means undeserved, unmerited gift.) “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9, The Bible). “The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23, The Bible).
- Today, as the Bible states, “God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31, The Bible). “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16, The Bible).
